Hope

Hope is a wonderful thing. It is one of those things that no one can ever take away from a person. It’s also a nice name for a baby girl, much better than Apple or Banana. Everybody has a little bit of hope in them. Whether it be ‘I hope I pass my maths test that I didn’t study for at all’ or ‘I hope it rains this morning because I really can’t be bothered to get dressed and go for a run in the cold’. Hope comes in many forms, and I think it mixes a bit with luck. You know, ‘oh I have a four leaf clover so I have good luck’ is really just hoping that a leprechaun doesn’t come to get their clover back.

So, here’s a story called

The Hopeful Puppy

Once upon a time, in a downtown house with a rendered exterior and bright green interior, lived a small white puppy. At least he was white until he dug a hole in the dirt. Okay, to rephrase. There was a puppy that is now brown with dirt, which lived in wait for his breakfast meal. His owner would feed him everyday, at different times and places so that he wouldn’t become expectant. The puppy knew that everyday there would be food eventually, somewhere.

Every night, he would go to sleep with happy dreams of what the next day would bring and that life always looks better after sleeping on it. So, he crawled into his tiny little doghouse, which was fitted with an iPod speaker set, plasma screen with Foxtel, and hot tub, and waited for the next day.

The next day was sunny, with the light streaming through the puppies Venetian blinds. He got out of bed and stretched his little legs, before relieving himself…

Then, he heard a door open.

‘RUN!’ so the puppy ran to the backdoor, assuming that a door opening meant his food was ready.

But it was just the owners annoying little child who liked to tease the puppy.

The dog went back to his house, and waited.

Then the next door open, this time it was the side door.

But it was only the wife throwing out the used shower water that had foamy bubbles. Now the puppy, who was brown with dirt, was now covered in colourful foamy bubbles. He looked like a sheep now, or a runaway cloud.

The puppy went back to his bed, feeling defeated. But he still had something to count on. Hope. He was still full of hope that his food would be coming soon. So, he waited and waited and waited, and watched an episode of ‘the Nanny’ on his television, and waited and waited.

Then his hope paid off. Because there came his owner with the biggest bowl he had ever seen. There was the best food and treats that any puppy could ever want. All that this puppy needed was to believe. Believe that hoping could bring you what you needed most in the world. And if hope couldn’t bring you what you wanted, then remember what this wise little puppy said.

‘Hope can bring you the best breakfast in the world, of what you want most in life. But if it seems like breakfast is late, or if the stupid owner forgot to feed their favourite puppy, just think. Your hope can never be taken away. With hope comes the puppy’s breakfast.’
